Design Thinking

Conflict doesn’t occur in isolation—it emerges from within a complex network of relationships, cultural norms, policies, and structural systems. A systems-thinking approach to conflict recognizes this complexity and resists the urge to reduce problems to individual blame.

By mapping the broader context—identifying both conflict drivers and mitigators—leaders and intervenors can respond with clarity, empathy, and strategy. This approach not only supports conflict resolution but also lays the groundwork for deeper organizational transformation.

Key Components

Using this method, Sarah will explore the underlying interests behind surface-level positions, fostering dialogue that prioritizes shared interests. This opens pathways toward sustainable, mutually beneficial outcomes—even when compromise is necessary.

Systems Thinking Actions in Conflict Intervention
Map the system: Identify the broader context in which the conflict exists—workplace culture, HR structures, policies, and relationships.

How will we do it?

Identify conflict drivers: Recognize influences contributing to the conflict (e.g. power dynamics, communication breakdowns, institutional practices).

Identify conflict mitigators: Pinpoint resources and systems that support resolution and peace (e.g. trusted mediators, inclusive policies, training).

Analyze impact: Examine how drivers and mitigators affect each party’s experience of the conflict.

Avoid oversimplification: Resist attributing blame to a single person or event; instead, consider the interplay of systemic factors.

Surface interests: Look beyond stated positions to understand the underlying motivations and concerns of each party.

Highlight shared interests: Use common ground as a foundation for generating collaborative solutions.

Encourage interest-based dialogue: Foster communication that invites exploration and understanding rather than defence or entrenchment.

Accept trade-offs: Acknowledge that not all interests can be fully met and facilitate discussions around acceptable compromises.

Act strategically: Use insights from system mapping to design targeted, long-term interventions that improve organizational culture and practices.
